If you've never been one to shop second hand, maybe it's time to find your thrifty.
You don't have to go window shopping in expensive stores to have a beautiful home. If you either don't have the money to spend, or don't want to spend it, you have an opportunity to work with what you've got and be thrifty. I promise, it can be fun. What's better than a cool spring morning spent browsing through other people's worn out treasures with fresh coffee in hand?
Speaking of opportunities, my kids just love when I use that word with them.
"You don't want to sweep the floor? I understand that. Right now you have an opportunity to grow in your character by doing something that you don't want to do."
"I'm so sorry your brother said that mean thing to you. Now you have an opportunity to forgive him and practice loving someone who is hard to love."
"No one wants to play with you? Well, that is their loss because you are totally awesome. You now have an opportunity to play by yourself. Mommy loves alone time. Loves it. Maybe you could try it."
"You don't have money for that dreamy furniture and new home decor in that coveted storefront? You have an opportunity to go on a scavenger hunt and make another man's trash your treasure."
Don't you just love me?
Opportunities, they are in the eye of the beholder.
Fellow mommas out there, has God been giving you opportunities to grow in patience? He gives them to me constantly. If only I would put the proper glasses on to see them.

Ok, enough of all that. Where was I? Oh yes, yard saling. Anyone know how to spell that? I don't.
I thought I'd do a little home tour of a few items I've bought second hand either at yard sales, consignment stores, or the best place ever--on the side of the road for FREE! Hopefully this will jumpstart your creativity and inspire you to get out there and have some fun. The opportunity to find your thrifty awaits you!
My Latest Finds
Bunk Beds--I bought solid wood bunk beds last weekend at a neighborhood yard sale for $95. Sometimes you head out and find the perfect new item you didn't even know you were looking for. Like my mom always says, "Sometimes you have to spend money to save money." :)
Lamps--I bought this pair of lamps for $10 at the same neighborhood yard sale. I'll need to buy shades, but that's no big deal. I had the lady grab a lightbulb and she plugged them in to make sure they still work. I've been burned before with dud lamps and she was happy to comply.
Side Tables--I grabbed these beauties on the side of the road for free last week. I'm in the process of rehabbing them now. Sandpaper and spray paint go a long way!
Finds From The Past
Hutch--I bought this at a consignment store. I don't remember how much, but I love it! It was definitely less than $100, I know that much. Solid wood, I'll take it!
Accent Chairs--I bought this pair of chairs several years ago at a consignment store. I believe they were $80 a piece. At the time they sounded expensive, but I had birthday money to spend and loved them so much that I pulled the trigger and bought them. Since then I have dabbled in painting furniture and now fully appreciate the price tag. (I am not a fan of painting chairs. That is some tedious work.) I love their originality and the fact that they are solid wood. They have been well worth their price. I have used them in our main living space, but currently they are located in our master bedroom.
Child's Desk & Bookcase--I bought these pieces at a consignment store six years ago. I remember both pieces being less than $100 combined. I don't usually spend more than that. I love their uniqueness and size. The tall, narrow bookshelf now serves as the most perfect side table for the top bunk in my boys' room. Score! And come to think of it, the small pine side table with three drawers also came from a yard sale for $12.
Coffee Table--$15 from my friend at her yard sale. Nothing better than that and I love the gold accents. I may paint it one day, but today is definitely not that day. I have found that I say "it'll do" far more easily than I used to now that four kids are in the mix.
There are literally second hand pieces of furniture in every room of my house, but I'll stop here for now. I've had a difficult time finding a reliable list of neighborhood yard sales online. Your best bet may just be to look for signs posted as you are driving around town. Good luck and have fun finding your thrifty!

New to us bunk beds! My boys are loving them. More pics below. Excuse the missing drawer in the dresser. It belonged to my husband growing up and the drawer is currently being repaired:) |

What bedroom can do without a "catch all" chair? My husband puts his shoes on here. This chair has been known to be covered in clothes from time to time:) |
